How to Choose Your Mid Layer: The PAE Outdoor Guide

By the Plein Air Entrepôt Team | Trekking, Hiking & Travel Specialists Since 2007

Why Is Choosing a Mid Layer So Difficult?

At Plein Air Entrepôt, the mid layer is without a doubt the item our customers struggle with the most. And that's understandable - there are dozens of options out there, technology evolves quickly, and the wrong choice can ruin an entire outing.

The good news: with the right criteria in mind, the decision becomes much simpler. Here are the three main options we recommend, based on your activity level and goals.

The Three Essential Criteria for a Good Mid Layer

Before choosing, keep this in mind: an effective mid layer must be warm AND breathable. These are the two non-negotiable criteria. If your mid layer doesn't breathe well enough, you'll overheat the moment you start moving, sweat, and end up feeling cold - the exact opposite of what you want.

A third criterion also comes into play depending on your objectives: weight and packability. If you're heading out on a long backcountry hike with a loaded pack, every gram matters and you may need to make a trade-off on breathability.

Option 1 - Down: Maximum Warmth, Limited Breathability

Down is the most popular mid layer, and for good reason: it delivers exceptional warmth for minimal weight. It's the perfect option for relaxed snowshoeing outings, chalet breaks, or low-intensity activities.

Advantages

  • Extremely warm
  • The lightest and most packable of the three options - it slips easily into a backpack without taking up much space
  • Ideal for static or low-intensity activities, or for warming up once you've reached camp

Limitations

  • Low breathability: if you're moving actively, you risk overheating quickly
  • With heavy sweating, down loses its thermal efficiency
  • Best avoided for high-intensity activities like cross-country skiing, aggressive snowshoeing, or backpacking (except when stopped)

Best for: low-intensity activities, extended breaks, calm winter outings, an insulating layer once you've stopped moving.

Option 2 - The Mountain Hardwear Kor Stasis: Synthetic Performance

For those who move more, we strongly recommend the Mountain Hardwear Kor Stasis. This synthetic insulated mid layer represents a significant performance leap over traditional down.

What Sets It Apart

  • Highly breathable - including under the arms, where a more open-knit fabric helps wick moisture where you sweat the most
  • Warm even while moving - synthetic insulation retains its thermal properties even when slightly damp
  • Moisture management - you stay dry and comfortable during exertion
  • Medium weight and volume - bulkier than down, but still easy to carry

This jacket is designed for active people who don't want to stop and add or remove layers constantly.

Best for: hiking, alpine skiing, aggressive snowshoeing, mixed-intensity activities.

Option 3 - The Mountain Hardwear Polartec High Loft: The Top Performer

This is the option our experts recommend most often - and yet it's the one customers consider the least at first. The Mountain Hardwear Polartec High Loft jacket is an ultra-breathable, long-pile fleece that represents, in our opinion, the pinnacle of mid-layer performance.

Why It's Our Favourite

  • Extreme breathability - you can literally see light through the fabric. That's how freely air circulates
  • Warm in all conditions - whether you're in full exertion or standing completely still
  • Exceptional versatility - comfortable from -15°C to +5°C, whether you're active or at rest
  • Perfect for long outings where conditions change along the way
  • The heaviest and most voluminous of the three - worth considering if pack space is limited, but the performance more than justifies the trade-off

This thick fleece does what no down jacket can: keep you warm when you stop AND wick away sweat when you push hard. That is the very definition of an ideal mid layer.

Best for: all high-intensity winter activities, mountain hiking, cross-country skiing, winter trail running.

In Summary: Three Profiles, Three Choices

  • You enjoy relaxed, low-intensity outings? → Down is perfect for you.
  • You're active and looking for performance and breathability? → A synthetic mid layer is your best ally.
  • You want the best of everything and maximum versatility? → The Mountain Hardwear Polartec High Loft — or any thick, high-pile fleece — is our number one recommendation.
